When removing cigarette smoke odor, two methods are often discussed: ozone and chlorine dioxide (ClO2). While both are oxidizing agents, they function differently and produce different long-term results in residential smoke remediation.
Ozone (O3) is a reactive oxygen molecule used in some odor control applications. It can temporarily alter odor perception by oxidizing airborne compounds. However, ozone does not consistently penetrate and neutralize embedded smoke residue inside porous building materials. It is a much larger molecule than chlorine dioxide and therefore is unable to penetrate as deelply as ClO2. Ozone is a larger molecule, thus stronger per molecule, so we generate much much more ClO2 so we get the strength of treatment AND the depth of treatment.
Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a powerful oxidizing gas that reacts directly with odor-causing organic molecules. Unlike masking agents, ClO2 chemically neutralizes smoke compounds at the molecular level, including those embedded in drywall, cabinets, and HVAC systems. We generate a very small molecule, .124 nanometers, that can penetrate very deeply into odor-contaminated pores of paint, concrete, metal HVAC ductwork, etc.
For properties in Phoenix with embedded smoke contamination, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) provides more reliable permanent odor neutralization when applied correctly as part of a structured remediation process.
